Newtown Pippin

Newtown Pippin

I nicknamed this tree my “problem child.” Appearing around 1759 in Long Island, New York, this greatly admired apple, was the only food commodity exempt from the crown import tax during Queen Victoria’s reign. It is grown across the country and known by dozens of names.

Charles and I ate this apple first at Wolfe Orchard in Monticello, IL and were delighted with its’ firm yellow flesh and juicy sweet-tart flavour. On our apple exploratory trip of 2020 we visited Albemarle Ciderworks in VA and tested more of these wonderful apples, regionally known as Albemarle Pippin. In our orchard the tree has had some frustrating issues for me to figure out. I am thankful for David from Century Farm Orchards in North Carolina who is wonderful at rare tree diagnosis, and has been an invaluable help. We look forward to our first delicious Newtown Pippins this fall.

We have one this year;)
