Black Twig
Black twig
This old Appalachian variety has a debatable origin. Good sources have claimed it coming from Tennessee around 1830, or Arkansas (1842). Believed to be a favorite of Andrew Jackson with the nickname “greasy apple”, this great keeper develops a heavy waxy skin in storage.
Black Twig is a large round dark red apple that starts off tart but matures into a nice sweet/acid balance around December. It is used for dessert, pies, apple butter, and cider.
