Black Oxford
Black Oxford
Often asked which apple is my favourite, I cannot answer. But which tree is an easier question. The Black Oxford is a beautiful tree and the tallest one now in our orchard. My daughter said that its’ bushy tip growth reminded her of a tropical plant.
Discovered around 1790 in Paris, ME by Nathaniel Haskell, the original tree was still producing fruit in 1907. The apples are almost black, medium-sized, with white-green flesh. It is a good all-purpose sweet-tart apple that stores late into winter.
